Category:ASHRAE Category:ASHRAE Standard1. Field of the Invention The present invention relates generally to fluid flow through filters and, more specifically, to a filter cartridge of an oil filter apparatus, such as an oil filter of the type used in internal combustion engines. 2. Description of the Related Art Oil filters are well known in the art and used to remove contaminants, such as sand, dirt and other particulate matter from lubricating oils, engine oils, and other fluids flowing in a filter cartridge of an oil filter apparatus. Many known oil filter apparatus comprise filter cartridges that are removable from the apparatus for disposal. The cartridge typically is discarded along with the oil filter apparatus. Known filter cartridges are single-use disposable items and do not permit reuse of the filter cartridge. One filter cartridge that can be reused is a pleated paper filter cartridge that includes a pleated filter media that has a length of the pleated filter media secured between two longitudinal end portions and a plurality of pleats extending therebetween. A filter media retainer holds the pleats in a regular array and prevents the pleats from becoming unaligned during use. Many filter cartridges of this type are formed by pleating a flat piece of filter media to provide a pleated configuration. In other known filter cartridges, the filter media is pleated as it is received in a cartridge housing and does not require additional securing or end portions to prevent unalignment of the pleats. The portion of the filter media that is pleated or not pleated is referred to as the “basis weight” of the filter media. The basis weight is often a key consideration for designing oil filter apparatus that use filter cartridges of this type. Typically, the basis weight of the filter media is considered as being proportional to the volume of the filter media. In many applications, such as internal combustion engines, the oil to be filtered typically has a low viscosity. Thus, a large amount of filtrate, such as filtrate that may be filtered by a single filter cartridge, passes through the filter media before the filter media is blocked. Thus, the filter media is considered to be “over-filtered” for the particular application. A “full” oil filter apparatus may use a larger filter media than required for a given oil or amount of fluid to be filtered. It has been recognized that in many applications, such as the oil of internal combustion engines, the filter media needs to be “
