Ovrfwrd Spotlight - Kilauea

In light of the recent eruption of Kilauea in Hawaii, we asked Mark Ilaug to speak to the Ovrfwrd track that bears its name.
"That music was something I wrote and played on guitar a long time ago, not even sure when. I would change and rearrange parts and it evolved quite a bit over the years. I never really did anything final with it, but it was always there. It never had a name. In 2017, as we were writing and doing pre-production for Blurring the Lines…A Democracy Manifest, I think Rikki suggested that we put it on the record, and so during the last recording sessions - I recorded it.
The recording was fairly basic - microphones and acoustic guitars. Triple tracked with classical and steel-string guitars layered. I think there's some 12 string in there too. When we were mixing the album, the piece still had no name. In April 2018, I was in Hawaii on vacation, and Mt Kilauea erupted in a different and much larger way than previous years. I had actually taken a helicopter tour over the crater just days before. This was my song name inspiration! Kilauea.
Track 3 on Blurring the Lines…A Democracy Manifest, released in fall of 2018. At 01:30 minutes, short and sweet. A nice musical statement, inspired by time and a volcano…. ”
